Awake and Alive – Part 4 – Leadership Awakened

June 23, 2024

“The aim of our charge is LOVE that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.” 1 Timothy 1:5 (ESV)

“…I am writing you these instructions so that…you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.” 1 Timothy 3:14-15 (NIV)

Basic Truths for Church Leadership

1) Jesus is the HEAD of the church.

Eph. 4:15; Eph. 5:23

2) We are ALL leaders within the church.

1 Peter 2:9

3) Some are called to leadership offices.

 1 Tim. 3; Titus 1

Understanding Church Leadership

(1 Timothy 3:1-13)

1) Character matters more than skill and charisma.

“…be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his family well…” 1 Timothy 3:2-4

2) Our character matters.

“…but set an example FOR THE BELIEVERS in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.” 1 Timothy 4:12 (NIV)

“So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up.” Ephesians 4:11-12 (NIV)

“…temperate, self-controlled…not violent, but gentle, not quarrelsome…” 1 Timothy 3:2 (NIV)

“Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” 1 Peter 3:5 (NIV)

3) Outsiders matter.

“He must also have a good reputation WITH OUTSIDERS, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil’s trap.” 1 Timothy 3:7 (NIV)

“Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God— even as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.” 1 Corinthians 10:32-33 (NIV)
