One Big Story

Things Get Broken – Part 3

“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth…he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else…For in him we LIVE and MOVE and HAVE OUR BEING.” Acts 17:24-28 (NIV)

Insights from the Fall

(Genesis 3)

1) I get a clearer view of God.

“And the Lord God commanded the man, ‘You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.’” Genesis 2:16-17 (NIV)

“…‘You are free to eat from ANY tree in the garden…” vs. 16 (NIV)

2) I get a better understanding of me.

· Deception leads me to doubt God.

“One day the snake said to the woman, ‘Did God really say that you must not eat fruit from ANY TREE in the garden?’ We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden. But God told us, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden. You must NOT EVEN TOUCH IT, or you will die…’” Genesis 3:1-3 (NLT)

“…But the snake said to the woman, ‘You will not die. God knows that if you eat the fruit from that tree, you will learn about good and evil and you will be like God!’” Genesis 3:4 (NLT)

· My doubts lead to disobedience.

“The woman was convinced…So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her…” Genesis 3:6 (NLT)

· My disobedience leads to disconnection.

“At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves.” Genesis 3:7 (NLT)

“When the cool evening breezes were blowing, the man and his wife heard the Lord God walking about in the garden. So they hid from the Lord God among the trees.” Genesis 3:8 (NLT)

3) I have a reason to hope.

· The promise of Christ.

“And I will cause hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. HE will strike your head, and you will strike HIS heel.” Genesis 3:15 (NLT)

· The provision of grace.

“And the Lord God MADE CLOTHING from animal skins for Adam and his wife.” Genesis 3:21 (NLT)

· The protection of eternity.

“Then the Lord God said, ‘Humans have become like one of us; they know good and evil. We must keep them from eating some of the fruit from the tree of life, or they will live forever…’ So the Lord God forced Adam out of the garden of Eden… he placed angels and a sword of fire…This kept people from getting to the tree of life.”Genesis 3:22-24 (NCV)
