1Let all who are under a yoke as bondservants regard their own masters as worthy of all honor, so that the name of God and the teaching may not be reviled. 2Those who have believing masters must not be disrespectful on the ground that they are brothers; rather they must serve all the better since those who benefit by their good service are believers and beloved. 1 Timothy 5:21-25
This passage can be challenging for modern readers due to its historical context. The “slavery” mentioned here refers more to indentured servitude, where workers received payment and potentially earned freedom. It’s important to distinguish this from the chattel slavery of the Americas.
The Bible doesn’t endorse such practices but uses the existing system to convey its message. Modern believers can still glean valuable principles from this passage.
The text emphasizes that a Christian’s conduct and calling don’t depend on their earthly position. Paul reminds us that believers are called to live a certain way, regardless of their social status.
