Awake and Alive – Part 5 – Banks Mill Campus – Relationships Awakened

June 30, 2024

“The aim of our charge is LOVE that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.” 1 Timothy 1:5 (ESV)

Relationships within the church should…

(1 Timothy 5:1-21)

1) …be built on HONOR and RESPECT.

“Do not rebuke an older man harshly, but exhort him as if he were your father…” vs. 1a (NIV)

“…Treat younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity.” vs. 1b-2 (NIV)

“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:35 (NIV)

2)…be built to TRULY help the MARGINALIZED.

“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” James 1:27 (NIV)

· Assistance begins at home.

“But if a widow has children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents, for this is pleasing to God… Anyone who does not provide for their relatives, and especially for their own household, has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” vs. 4, 8 (NIV)

· Assistance is relational not institutional.

“The widow who is really in need and left all alone puts her hope in God and continues night and day to pray and to ask God for help. But the widow who lives for pleasure is dead even while she lives. vs. 5-6 (NIV)

3) …built to reflect EQUALITY.

“I charge you, in the sight of God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels, to keep these instructions without partiality, and to do nothing out of favoritism.” vs. 21 (NIV)

“If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, ‘Here’s a good seat for you,’ but say to the poor man, ‘You stand there’ or ‘Sit on the floor by my feet,’ have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?” James 2:3-4 (NIV)

“The aim of our charge is LOVE that issues from a PURE HEART and a GOOD CONSCIENCE and a SINCERE FAITH.” 1 Timothy 1:5 (ESV)
