Day 17

1 Timothy 4:11-12

11Command and teach these things. 12Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. 1 Timothy 4:11-12

While estimates suggest Timothy was in his mid-30s when Paul wrote this letter, it’s important to consider the shorter life expectancy in the first century. Compared to today’s standards, Timothy might be considered “younger” within the social context. This “youth” likely refers to his relative inexperience compared to Paul and other church elders who had followed Jesus and learned from Paul for a longer time.

Paul offers an intriguing solution to prevent Timothy from being looked down upon. He doesn’t advise self-defense but encourages Timothy to live such a devout life that it becomes evident to everyone that he’s chosen for ministry. This approach offers freedom. By quietly and faithfully following Jesus, Timothy can avoid the pressures and opinions of others.
