One Big Story – Law and Order – Part 5

One Big Story

Law and Order – Part 5

“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth…For IN HIM we live and move and have our being.” Acts 17:24, 28 (NIV)

The Purpose of God’s Law

(Exodus 20)

1) To confirm God’s love, not as a condition of it.

“And God spoke all these words: ‘I am the Lord YOUR God who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.’” Exodus 20:1-2 (NIV)

“Clearly, God’s promise to give the whole earth to Abraham and his descendants was based NOT ON HIS OBEDIENCE to God’s law, but on a right relationship with God that comes BY FAITH.” Romans 4:13 (NLT)

2) To reveal God’s values.

“You must not have any other god but me. You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind…You must not misuse the name of the Lord your God.” Exodus 20:3-7 (NLT)

“Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy…” Exodus 20:8 (NLT)

“Honor your father and mother…You must not murder…You must not commit adultery…You must not steal…You must not testify falsely against your neighbor…You must not covet…” Exodus 20:12-17 (NLT)

3) To reveal our need for grace and forgiveness.

“For no one can ever be made right with God by doing what the law commands. The law simply shows us how sinful we are.” Romans 3:20 (NLT)

“Sin is no longer your master, for you no longer live under the requirements of the law. Instead, you live under the freedom of God’s grace.” Romans 6:14 (NLT)
